Determination
Reading Skill
Over a period of time in sold, Lakshmi really loses faith in herself and comes to a point where she just doesn't believe, but no matter what through out sold she never stops losing determination. Being put into a position at age 12 where you were sold into sex and are being raped and abused verbally, physically, and mentally who wouldn't lose hope and feel the need to just give up! In the near end of the book the white man comes for Lakshmi acting as a customer for sex. After he says he will come back for her and help her. Despite the comments Mumtaz and her friend say to her about how the white men will take advantage,of her, Lakshmi was willing to do anything. When he came to see Lakshmi again he showed her pictures of what the other girls he had helped looked like and how happy they were. The little bit of hope she had always had grew so much bigger. After two days of his words that he would come back to get her he never did, that was until a few days later. One day she hears him downstairs fighting with Mumtaz. “Something inside me breaks open, and I run down the steps” (263) This small act showed so much determination and strength in Lakshmi. It showed that no matter the consequences of her actions she was going to keep pushing until she got out of this place. Without her act of pure bravery she probably would still be being sold as a sex slave and living the life she had. This to me was the most important and eye opening part to sold. Lakshmi knew that she had to take a stand not only for her but for everyone in the “Happy” house. Her determination was what really saved her in the end.
Why I Choose This?
For knowledge and reading we were given the task to write three ccqc's on the book Sold by Patricia McCormick. This gave us the chance to recap and tell the story but also discuss our views on what was happening. These small writing assignments kept us up to date on our reading and taught us how to interpret and discuss reading. Doing the ccqc gave you a chance to really show how you felt and discuss your feelings on the plot, writing skill, and writer’s purpose on writing the book. This piece of work shows that I am capable of interpreting writing and that I can apply my writing skills to reading and understanding the information coming out of a book. I choose this sample of writing because I think it was one of by best pieces and shows what I am very capable of!
